There’s an artist I’ve been wanting to introduce you to for quite some time: Toshio Saeki. I’ve always found his work fascinating, and I think now is the perfect opportunity to share it with you.

Born in 1945, Toshio Saeki was one of the most prominent artists associated with Japan’s erotic-grotesque (ero-guro) movement. His distinctive style, which emerged during the 1960s and ’70s, explores the unsettling blend of violence, pain, pleasure and eroticism. His surreal and often disturbing imagery is also regarded as an important precursor to certain visual styles found in manga and anime. Drawing heavily on Japanese folklore, mythology and familiar tales, Saeki created a world that is as fascinating as it is unsettling.
